Private, U.S. Army

Son of George William HUFFORD (b. 1855) and Sarah Ann HARNER (b. 1858).

Brother of Catherine E., Flora Ann, George Daniel, Gelbert, Clifford, and Cassie.

Grandson of Andrew H. HUFFORD (1827-1881) and Sarah Catharine CRIPE (1833-1907).

In 1885, Robert was living with his parents and siblings (Flora and George) in Conway, Kansas, when the Kansas state census was taken. His father was operating a restaurant.

He enlisted in the U.S. military on September 16, 1899, and was honorably discharged June 30, 1901.

In 1900, Robert was listed with his parents and siblings on the census of Carroll County, Indiana, with the notation, "soldier in Philippines." He was listed as "single" in 1900.

According to Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941, Robert A. Hufford married Mary J. SHAFFER on December 18, 1905, in DeKalb Co., Indiana. (For unknown reasons, the 1909 HUFFORD FAMILY HISTORY at page 83 incorrectly lists Robert's wife as "Miss NETHERCUT.")

In 1918, Robert was in Fresno, California, where he owned and operated a garage. He listed his next of kin as Arthur R. Hufford on his WW I Draft Registration Card. Arthur was his son.

By 1920, Robert was divorced. He is listed on the 1920 census in Fresno, Fresno County, California. Census date was January 20, 1920. He was listed as a merchant of rubber tires.

His ex-wife was listed in Township 3, Fresno County, California, with their two children: Arthur R. (1910-1971) and Dorothy M. (b. 22-Feb-1916).
