John Wheeler of Montclair, NJ, enrolled in the 26th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 3, 1862, and was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company F on September 18, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, and in the May 1863, the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was mortally wounded near Bank's Ford, Virginia, and died of his wounds near Fredericksburg at the age of 27. According to the 1908 memoirs of Philip Doremus, a man from his hometown who remembered him well, Sgt. Wheeler's body was "kindly cared for by a Confederate family" until it could be sent back to New Jersey. His survivors included his young wife, Matilda, and their little son. On August 24, 1863, Matilda Wheeler applied for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #31090, Certificate #14049)
