Gayle B. Platz, age 100 of Shelbina, Missouri, formerly of Brashear, Missouri, passed away June 29, 2000 at the Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina, Missouri.
Gayle Buhl Platz was born in Adair County, Missouri on April 27, 1900, the only child of Samuel Joseph and Ida Belle Conkle Platz. After his father's accidental death, he took over the family farm west of Brashear, along the Salt River, where he milked and raised Angus cattle. On June 27, 1926 he was united in marriage to Thelma Houghton in Brashear. She died in 1984.
Gayle is survived by one son, Howard Platz of Shelbina, Missouri; three grandsons, Jerry Platz of Mantorville, Minnesota, John Platz of Springfield, Missouri and Ronald Platz of Fountain Valley, California and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Platz.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Platz was preceded in death by one son, Gayle Platz, Jr. who died in infancy.
Gayle attended Brashear High School for three years and graduated from Kirksville High School. He was a member of the Brashear Community Bible Church at Brashear, Missouri where he taught the mens class and sang tenor in the choir. He enjoyed baseball and was part of a local traveling team in the 1920's.
Mr. Platz also loved music and provided live music on the OATS bus. Gayle was featured on Channel 2, "Good Neighbor Spotlight" with his banjo. Gayle liked to sing for programs for school PTA meetings and also enjoyed quartets. He learned to play the French Harp when he was 5 years old and ordered a violin from Sears when he was about 10 years old, which he learned to play by correspondance. During the depression he taught kids to play on various instruments as there was little money for other entertainment.
Mr. Platz was a genealogist and delighted to point out that he had traced the Platz' back to to Adam - Adam Platz, who came to Philadelphia from Germany in the 1730's. He wrote the history for the Brashear Centennial in 1972, "Trails to Rails" for the occasion and it has proven to be an invaluable history for generations to come.
