Edward was the son of William Smylie and Anna Julia Lightall according to family records. He was a brass founder in New York, NY, and held patents for andirons, examples of which survive today.

He married Elizabeth "Eliza" Hardie on 14 Nov. 1816 at the Allen St. Methodist Church in Manhattan. They had 11 children together, as follows:
