ღ My Grandmother ღ aka 'Bebo'
Mallie was born in Barren County to L.N. Jackman, and Bettie Chapman. She went to Chestnut Grove school as a child w/her brothers, sisters, and lifelong friends. One of her delights beginning as a child was the circuit preacher arriving, usually once a month. She spoke of her excitement during the walk from home to Mount Tabor Baptist Church where she was raised. She and Buford Young Smith were married on the 1st of December, 1917. They moved from Barren County to Louisville soon after the birth of their daughter, Louise. She was (and still is) known as "Bebo" by her family and our friends. She had many brothers and sisters with whom she was very close. All of them preceded her in death, which brought a deep sadness during her last years.
Bebo was past president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, South Louisville Chapter; member of Victory Memorial Baptist Church, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Auxiliary, and Wilder Park Widows Club. She loved to read; had a passion to learn, and was our family historian by keeping journals of daily living, special events, news clippings, and taking piles of notes I'm still going through. For many years she noted each "Big Snow" on old wallpaper in their kitchen pantry. When she died, our family library burned to the ground.
Buford and Mallie had one daughter.
Since thou canst no longer stay
To cheer me with thy love,
I hope to meet with thee again
In yon bright world above.
As I sit safe in Heaven
and watch you every day
I try and let you know with signs
I never went away
I hear you when you're laughing
and watch you as you sleep
I even place my arms around you
to calm you as you weep
