Get Four Deer in Lytle Creek
Here's the best deer story yet. And it is true, first hand from the hunters themselves, who bagged two deer in the middle fork of the Lytle Creek and two more in the Sansevain flats, says the Ontario report. The party was made up of Putnam Perdew, Jerry Spray, Arthur Myers, Luther Starbuck, Doc Perdew of Etiwanda, and Clifton Perdew of San Bernardino. They struck out for the Lytle Creek country at the opening of the season and up toward the top of the middle fork, killed two deer, the honors falling to 'Doc' and 'Put' Perdew. Far up in the canyon the hunters say they saw a band of mountain sheep numbering eight. The Savsevain flats were next visited and here, Clifton Perdew bagged a two-prong buck and his cousin, Doc, got a spike buck.

THROWN BY HORSE, BOY BADLY HURT
Putnam Perdew Jr., oldest son of Mrs. J. P. (R.P.) Perdew, was seriously injured when thrown from a horse Monday, while at the home of his brother-in-law, Chris Nederman (Niederman), of San Jacinto. Mr. Nederman (Niederman) came over in his auto for Mr. and Mrs. Perdew and took them to their son's bedside. He was taken to the San Bernardino county hospital Tuesday where he lies in a critical condition, not having yet regained consciousness.

According to Doc's nephew, Jim E. Lamb, "Doc Perdew and his brother-in-law, Lou Lamb were cowboying on the Chris and Daisy (Perdew) Niederman Ranch. Doc was thrown from a bronco, landing on his head and broke his neck. Consequently, he always had a permanent crook in his neck, so they would not take him in the service during WWI. They took Lou, but Doc could not enlist. My understanding was he was never accepted for military service, and I had heard that they tried to fix, brace, his neck, but couldn't. He did quit riding horses and did go to work as a miner, in Atolia. Also, he and his wife, Tina (Carpena) Perdew, did live there, for a while, after they were married in 1922.
His hair was not red (as his WWI Draft card states) that I remember, and we saw them a lot as he and Dad were best friends. I would call his hair 'sandy or dirty blond' in color. Some people have seen photos of Clifton Perdew in a sailor uniform and mistaken him for Doc, as they looked very similar back then.
