Shadow was Royce's K-9 partner in the U.S. Border Patrol. Shadow was a drug detecting dog.
She was a pure-bred Black Labrador Retriever. She was the first Black Labrador Retriever detection dog in the U.S. Border Patrol.
Shadow served in the San Diego sector from 1997 until 1999. She helped apprehend over $5.8 million in narcotics, over 2200 human apprehensions, and $14.6 thousand in contaminated cash.
Shadow was retired from service in October 1999, when we moved from California to New Mexico. Shadow was donated back to the Border Patrol and reinstated to full service. She served in the El Paso sector until December 2000, when she was retired again.
Shadow performed so well throughout her career, it influenced the National Canine Facility to utilize more Black Labrador Retrievers.
Since Shadow had been donated to the U.S. Border Patrol from the Las Cruces New Mexico Sheriffs department, the Patrol gave Shadow to Royce as a gift when she was retired both times.
Shadow lived with us until 2007 when she passed away.
She was always loyal, happy and wanted to chase a ball. Her spirit was willing and loving, even when she couldn't walk very well due to arthritis of the tail-bone. We took her camping, on jeep rides, swimming in the Gila River, and almost everywhere we went. She was a wonderful friend.
As she got older, she became rather cantankerous with our other dogs, so we took to calling her "Old Bag." It was not mean spirited, just in fun. Shadow responded to both Shadow and Old Bag. It was just kind of a joke.
She was a beloved pet with our cat, Boots and Flintstone.
A big, heartfelt THANK YOU to Joyce for sponsoring Shadow's memorial. She is an angel on earth.
