During WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 15 and was honorably discharged for being underage. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars; he retired at the rank of Captain with 30 years of service.
He worked for the Orange County Comptrollers Office for the next 13 years and was a Certified Internal Auditor. On Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950, he married his childhood sweetheart.

He is survived by his wife, 3 sons and their spouses; grandchildren, sister, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Capt.Nielsen was an active member of the 1st Marine Division Association, the Military Officers Association of America, the Military Order of World Wars, American Legion, Mustangs, and National Sojourners.

Services were held on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3377 Aloma Avenue, Winter Park, Florida. Interment immediately following at Glen Haven Memorial Park.
