Harry Cloyes, 85, of Germantown, passed away September 16, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was born August 6, 1926 at his home in Germantown and lived in the same place all his life. He was educated at M. C. Williams School (now Germantown High School). He truck farmed and grew flowers and plants until 1951 when he, Rebecca, and Mrs. Mamie Cloyes opened Oaklawn Garden Florist and Greenhouse (the first florist in Germantown). He married Rebecca Johnson in 1951 and they continued operating Oaklawn Garden Florist and Greenhouse after the death of Mamie Cloyes, closing it at the end of 1990. He and Rebecca continued to operate Oaklawn Garden Museum. In 1993, a historic plaque was placed at the Museum and in 1994 the National DAR honored the museum with the National Conservation Medal Award through the WE AH TAH UMBA Chapter of the DAR. A member of Germantown Presbyterian Church, he is surved by his wife of 60 years, Rebecca Cloyes. He was a former member of the Germantown Civic Club, Germantown Beautification committee and the Germantown Historical Committee. Mr. Cloyes was an unofficial host for the Germantown area. A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 19 at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m., Monday at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Poplar Avenue.
