Nicolai was born Nicolai Haagensen in Trondheim, Norway. He married Bridt in Trondheim in 1885, and immigrated to America in 1887, settling in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Bridt and their first two children followed a year later. He became a citizen of the United States in 1906. Nicolai worked for the Wisconsin Milling Company for 23 years, in the sawmill and brickyard, and later as a salesman for the flour company. They had eleven children; only four survived Nicolai. He was a member of the Norwegian Lutheran Church.
