John was A graduate of Peabody Conservatory and orchestra director. He studied violin, piano and theory. Along with his work for Peabody he was a member of the Paint and Powder Club. He composed several musical comedies for amateur organizations. John was a chief aide for Frederick R. Huber with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. John also worked as director or orchestral and band music for Baltimore Public Schools.
John was the son of Mary and Peter Itzel. He was also husband of Mamie(Simpson) and loving step-father to daughters Ada and Mamie Jeanette Gruner. John was also the cousin of Adam Itzel, Jr.
