"Goodbye Mama." Grandma would often tell the story of waking up to a plane flying overhead and hearing a man's voice. She wasn't sure which son was talking (Frank was fighting in Korea, John was stationed at an embassy clinic in India). She had just buried her husband of 34 years (he died in March) and the "boys" had returned to their duty stations two weeks before. A telegram arrived, "Dear Madame, we regret to inform you..."

Bobo was stationed with Fighter Squadron 193 aboard the USS Princeton (CVA-37). He was piloting an F9F-5 type aircraft on 6 May 1953 on a routine combat mission twenty miles north of Tanchon, Korea when the aircraft was struck by enemy fire. Remains were not recovered.

His citation for the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded posthumously, reads in part: "Participating in a combat mission over enemy-held territory, (he) fearlessly pressed home a bombing attack on enemy supply buildings...Despite the heavy enemy fire, he carried out a daring strafing run on another supply building, causing it to burst into flames....he elected to remain with the plane despite the hazards of near-by mountains....he expertly piloted his aircraft over the mountainous area to the sea and attempted a water landing...by his superb airmanship, courageous initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, (he) materially aided the efforts of friendly forces."

He was also awarded the Air Medal with Gold Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

He is also identified on the Korean War Memorial in Dayton, Ohio.
