JUDGE J.H. HAYES--- J.H. Hayes died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bachar, 1111 Miami street Sunday, Sept. 1, at 5:30 p.m. The funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was made in the Hiawatha cemetary. James H. Hayes was born in Ross county, Ohio, Feb 27, 1840. He was raised on a farm and received an ordinary common school education. He was married March 14, 1861 to Miss Susannah Weller, to whom were born two children, Leona C. and Bertha A. Leona died at the age of 15 years and six months. Bertha A. became the wife of J.W. Hogue, who now resides on West Kansas Avenue. He enlisted Feb. 27, 1864, in Co. M. First O.V.C. and served the remainder of the war, being mustered out Sep. 28, 1865. His wife died Jan. 13, 1865, while he was yet in the army. He again married April 19, 1866 to Mrs. Mattie E. Herman, a soldier's widow with three sons, Walter S., Louis M., and Albert H. Of this second marriage there were four daughters and two sons. The second wife died Jan. 18, 1888. Mr. Hayes moved from Ross county, Ohio to Baker, Kansas in 1882, where he farmed for five years, then moved into Baker, where he had lived since up to his being taken sick when he went to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bachar where he died. He was married the third time Feb. 28, 1898 to Mrs. Zella F. Hixson, of Good Hope, Ohio, who also died a few years ago. Mr Hayes was elected to and served five terms as justice of the peace at Baker, and served as notary public ten years. He was appointed postmaster at Baker July 13, 1899, and served until a year ago, when declining health made it neccessary to retire. Mr. Hayes was a very fine man, honest and upright all along the long road of life, a good citizen at all times and a loyal Republican to his death. In all the varigated vicissitudes of his long career he never flinched from duty, but bravely met the trials that crossed his path. Peace be to the ashes of this kind, good man is the wish of all who knew him well.
