Aged Woman Passes On
Citizens Pay Respect

Grandma Maddox, centenarian and perhaps the oldest person in the San Juan, passed away last Friday morning aged 100 years, 4 months and 10 days. Since the celebration of her 100th birthday (November last) she had resigned to the inevitable realizing that the last summons was near at hand. Grandma's maiden name was Jane Emmet and she was a grand niece of the celebrated Patriot of Ireland, Robert Emmet. She was born near Cincinnati, Ohio on November 18, 1823 but early in life came west; later, together with her son Emmet and her son Thomas and family established her home at Aztec during the latter part of the year 1904.
Mrs. Maddox was much beloved by all who knew her, a devout Christian and devout mother. Few have been privileged to enjoy the span of life reaching from Century to Century and of those who have lived to such an extreme age a very few have enjoyed the blessings of health and retaining strength, both mentally and physically to the end.
The funeral was held from the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and a large number of friends were assembled to pay tribute in memory of the departed. Rev. Dawn, assisted by Revs Hoxie and Michael, conducted the services, and a chorus of selected voices sweetly and softly rendered favorite hymns. The remains were interred in Aztec Cemetery.
(A thank you underneath the obit thanks everyone in the community, and is signed MF, TP and SE Maddox.)

NOTE: Was married to Baptist preacher Charles Venable Maddox who was born 30 Aug 1812 in Prince Edward County, Virginia and died 13 Jul 1871 in St. Clair County, Missouri. Jane was his 3rd wife and they had 4 known children.
