Billy James Martin was a son of Hubert James Martin and Mattie Belle Roark Martin. Billy grew up and lived his entire life in the Gainesville area, except for two years while serving in the US Army. He graduated from Sardis High School in 1951 and from North Georgia College. He was a successful business man, running several small businesses in Northeast Georgia. Billy was an avid outdoorsman, hunting when he could, and loved to farm and ranch. His greatest joy in life were his children and especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church and served as a trustee of the Antioch Campground for more than 45 years, attending Camp Meeting every year except when serving in the army. His funeral was held at the Camp grounds with his grandson, Whit, giving the eulogy.

In about 1998, I had the pleasure of spending a week with Billy and his wife, Margaret (they married on April 21, 1957). We worked on history from rising until the wee hours of the morning, having so much fun tracing the ancestors and putting together the clues that told the story of our families. Even then, his grandchildren were his first priority, keeping in touch by phone and by visiting. He and Margaret were the most gracious hosts and kept in touch. Billy was my cousin but he felt like the uncle I never had and I miss him greatly.
