Alma Leonara Hanson was born September 21, 1896 at Hayward, Freeborn County, Minnesota, daughter of H.P. and Hannah Hanson. She was baptized in Riceland Lutheran Church and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minnesota. She graduated from Albert Lea High School, Normal Department, in 1915 and taught two years in Freeborn County rural schools.
On December 27 1917, she was united in marriage to Harald J.P. Nielsen at Albert lea; they moved to the farm north of Lake Benton in the spring of 1918. Five children were born to this union, Palmer who died in 1923; Pastor W. Clayton Nielsen of Bethany Lutheran Church, Axtell, Nebraska; Wayne E.K Nielsen of Culver City, California,; Ethel (Mrs. Keith Eddy) who died in 1975; and Pastor A. Everett Nielsen, Assistant to the Bishop, Fallbrook, California; 16 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchildren. She is survived as well, by three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ethel) Sondergard and Mrs. A.m. (Lucille) Vig, both of Albert Lea, Minnesota. Mrs. Donald (Genevive) Jensen of Owatonna, Minnesota, one brother, Andrew C. Hanson of Mercer Island, Washington.
She was a member of Diamond Lake Lutheran church until January 1, 1967 at which time she transferred her membership to Bethany-Elim Lutheran Church in Ivanhoe. She served as organist at Diamond Lake for thirty years, as well as Sunday School teacher and Lutheran Church Women Officer, and was a member of the Church Council at Bethany-Elim, served as school board member of District 16, and taught in Lincoln County rural schools from 1943-1946.
Her first husband died in 1938; on July 18, 1946, she was married to Hans Meyer, who preceded her in death in 1976. Since her first stroke in 1974, Alma has lived at home in Diamond Lake, at a nursing home at Balaton, and since 1976, she has been a resident of Divine Providence Home in Ivanhoe where she received love and care during her invalid years. She departed this life august 7, 1985 at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 21 days. Funeral service was held at Bethany-Elim Lutheran Church, Ivanhoe, on August 13, with committal at Diamond Lake Cemetery.
Alma Meyer's greatest joys were her family and her church; she was devoted to both. She was a much-loved mother and grandmother, a superb homemaker, who loved her garden flowers in the summer and her house plants in winter.
Mourning her los, but rejoicing in the hope of the blessed Resurrection, are her three sons and their families, her son-in-law and his family, her three sisters and one brother, and a host of friends, may of whom ministered to her in her later years, as she ministered to them when she was able. She was ready to go to be with her Lord and to be reunited with her loved ones who had gone on before. May God bless her memory.
