|Death: ||Apr. 18, 1644|
My 8th great-grandmother.
Parents unknown. There are many speculations and many possibilities, but no one knows for sure.
One known child, Godfrey Ragsdale ~ known by the descendants as Godfrey Ragsdale II.
It is believed that she died with her husband on 'Opechancanough Day' or 'Massacre Day.' It was named for the instigator, the half brother of Powhatan, father of Pocohontas."
"Among those attacking, were the Chickahominy Indians from just across the river. Chief Arthur L. Adkins, the chief of the tribe in 1987, and also a 1977 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, with a master's degree, related the Indians' view of the events. The Chickahominy Indians had initially had a good relationship with the settlers, but when the English came, not to trade, but to take, the hostilities began. The massacres of 1622 and 1644 were a direct result of the encroachment of the colonists on the Indian villages ('Chickahominy Chieftan, Jerry Lewis,' Virginia Commonwealth University Magazine, Summer, 1987)."
Godfrey Ragsdale (1620 - 1644)*
Godfrey Ragsdale (1643 - 1703)*
Note: Grandpa & Grandma Ragsdale died in the massacre of 1644 and were probably buried in mass graves with the others of that terrible day.
