Member: GAR - Crawfordsville, Indiana, Liberty Church and the Masonic Lodge. Samuel raised his family and lived as a farmer in Indiana doing plaster work on the side. He was devastated upon the death of his wife shortly after giving birth to their last child and never remarried. When this child, Samuel Milby Jr. was just 14 years old another blow struck this family when after getting permission to take out the horse and buggy something spooked the horse causing him to run off. Little Samuel was thrown from the carriage and died instantly.
86th IN Infantry - Pvt. Co. K
He enlisted as a Private on August 15, 1862 in Company K, 86th Infantry Regiment Indiana. He was wounded in the battle of Chicamauga, GA on Sept. 20, 1863; while engaged with his command during the battle he received a severe and permanent injury to his right shoulder when the limb of a tree which was cut loose by a cannon shot. This resulted in him falling and the tree stricking him as he fell to the ground. The injury disabled him from active duty for about 2 months. Samuel mustered out on June 6, 1865 in Nashville, TN.
