Corp Stephen Paul Curley
Birth: unknown
Dewsbury
West Yorkshire, England
Death: May 26, 2010
Helmand, Afghanistan

Corporal
Charlie Company
40 Commando
Royal Marines
British Naval Service

He was serving with Combined Force Sangin deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He was killed in an explosion while on a foot patrol through the southern Green Zone around Sangin, Helmand province.

Aged 26, he was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and lived in Exeter. He enlisted in 2003 and served a tour of duty in Iraq in 2004 and Afghanistan in 2006. He also gained experience in mountain and cold-weather operations after training in Norway. In 2009 he volunteered for the arduous nine-month Mountain Leaders Course and then completed the Advanced Urban Combat Instructor's Course. In March 2009 he deployed on his second tour in Afghanistan. A keen runner and mountain climber, he also reigned supreme in the gym. Colleagues remembered him as a natural leader and exceptional Royal Marine headed for the highest echelons.

Cpl Curley is survived by his wife Kirianne and their infant son William, his mother Andrea, brother Sean and other family and friends. His widow said, "Stevie was a perfectionist - he prided himself on being the best and the best he was. His professionalism was highly regarded by all who knew him but it was his quirky, un-PC one-liners that really caused a stir. Steve loved to make people laugh and laugh with them. Stevie was a quietly proud man, proud to be a Royal, proud to be my husband and proud to be a daddy. Steve stood firmly for what he believed in; a man who lived by his convictions and fought vehemently for what he thought was right."

A repatriation ceremony was held at
RAF Lyneham on June 3, 2010. Funeral was held on June 17, 2010 in Exeter.
