Lovable, funny and smart. Josephine was my friend. She was an incredible lady who never seemed to run out of energy.

Her obituary:
Josephine Mary (Banis) Smith, 96, of Charlotte Hall, MD and formerly of Ocean City, MD passed away on August 26, 2013 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home where she had been a resident since January 21, 2013.

She was born on April 8, 1917 in Hudson, MA, daughter of the late Joseph Alfred Baniewicz and the late Stephanie (Poreda) Baniewicz.

Josephine's first job was working in a wool factory at the age of 12, making 2 cents an hour. You could buy a loaf of bread for 5 cents and butter for 7 cents. She survived the polio epidemic and the 1918 Spanish Influenza. While attending Thayer High School, she held numerous jobs in factories, waited tables and was a lifeguard. She graduated in 1935.

After her marriage in 1940, she and her husband moved to Washington, DC. In 1955 she opened the Accokeek Bake Shoppe. A few years later she moved to Bryans Road and worked for North Indian Head Estates Development. Josephine moved to Ocean City, MD in 1976 and enjoyed gardening and crabbing off her pier.

In addition to her parents, Josephine was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael Joseph Smith; her son, Jeffrey; her 2 brothers, Steven and Theodore; and 3 of her sisters, Sophie, Ronnie, and Veronica.

Josephine is survived by her children, Philip Smith of La Plata, MD, Jacqueline & husband Eugene St. Clair of Compton, MD and their daughters, Michelle & husband Robert Negro of West Virginia, Stephanie & husband Robert Murphy of California, MD, Jeannine & husband Dave Embree of Navarre, OH, his son, Eugene St. Clair, II and fiancé Melanie Amoss of Arlington, VA; great grandchildren, Caitlin & Haley Murphy, Garrett & Alyssa Embree, Philip's son Jeffrey and his girlfriend Amy; and nephew, Theodore W. Banis, Jr. and family.

Arrangements are being handled by Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A private Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at a later date.

In Lieu of Flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to: Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, 29449 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622.
