Judge, politician, and Congressman.

Born in Vermont, he was a delegate to the Vermont state constitutional convention in 1843, and a member of the Vermont State Senate 1847-48. In 1853-54, he served as Lieutenant Governor of Vermont. In 1858, he moved to Minnesota, to take advantage of economic opportunities then beginning in that territory. In 1863, he was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives, and served twice as a justice in the Dakota territorial supreme court, 1865-1875, and 1879-1883. In 1867, he had to go to Kansas to identify the body of his son, Lyman, who was killed there by Cheyenne Indians. In 1875-1879, he was a delegate to the US Congress from Dakota Territory. He died while serving in office of the Dakota Supreme Court. He is buried in the family plot in the Oakland Cemetery.
