Henry Tilgner was born in the Province of Silesia, Germany, on January 13, 1850, and passed from this life at the family home in Lewellen early Saturday morning, October 28, 1933, at the advanced age of 83 years, 9 months and 15 days. He passed his early years in the homeland, receiving his education in the schools of that country. At the age of 19 years he started out in the world for himself, emigrating to the new country of America. He first settled on a farm near Watertown, Wis. When he came to Nebraska in 1885 he took up a homestead and pre-emption in Frontier county and continued to live there for ten years, developing a valuable and productive farm. He sold this place in 1895 and moved from there to a farm a few miles east of Lewellen where [he] lived until about sixteen years ago when he retired from active work.
For the past several years Mr. Tilgner and his family have made their home in Lewellen and it was at this home that he met the end of his life journey.
In February, 1871, Mr. Tilgner was married to Miss Minnie Schultz, she passing way sixteen years later leaving a family of eight children. He was married again to Miss Betty Kirsch it North Plate and to this union four children were born, they being Mrs. Anna Green, Irving E. Tilgner, Roy C. Tilgner, all of Lewellen and Alice Glasgow of Falls City, Nebr.
Funeral services were held from the family home in Lewellen Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. W. M. Daubenspeck, pastor of the Lutheran churches at Lewellen and Oshkosh, delivering the funeral sermon. A large congregation assembled for the services and went to the family plot in the Ash Hollow cemetery where the remains were laid to rest.
