*"FONT - The village of Font, which comprises no more than a dozen houses six miles north of Downingtown, grew around the agricultural enterprises of John R. Hoffman. Font, so named from an ever-flowing spring on the south side of Black Horse Hill, was officially recognized on Feb. 27, 1882, when it became a post office for farmers. Hoffman, who was a school director of Upper Uwchlan Township, was the principal instigator of the post office, though Joe Finch, a colored shoemaker, was the postmaster during the first two weeks of its existence. The name Creamery was first written on the application for a post office, but it was crossed out and the name Font written above it."
