Dr. Barry S. Goldstein: Area man dies in fall at park in Utah: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) - Sunday, June 10, 2007

Deceased Name: Dr. Barry S. Goldstein: Area man dies in fall at park in Utah

A St. Louis-area anesthesiologist died Friday when he fell from a cliff on a popular hiking trail in Utah's Zion National Park.
Dr. Barry S. Goldstein, 53, of Creve Coeur, plummeted 1,000 feet into a canyon from the Angels Landing Trail, a steep 2.5-mile hike that concludes with a walk out over a "knife-edge ridge" above the desert landscape below, park spokesman Tom Haraden said.
Goldstein was hiking with family members when he fell, Haraden said. The family was visiting the park to celebrate a wedding on Saturday and was believed to have a connection to the nearby city of St. George, Haraden said. The park is in southwestern Utah, about 15 miles north of the Arizona border and 160 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
The spot where Goldstein fell is a wilderness area, and the ridge does not have any railings or walls separating it from the canyon below.

Dr. Barry Goldstein: Hiking was passion of doctor who fell to his death: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

TOWN AND COUNTRY - As shocking as Dr. Barry Goldstein's death was, no one was surprised to hear it happened while he was hiking along the edge of a towering cliff in a national park.
"He loved to exercise; he loved to be outside," said Harold Dielmann, a former neighbor and the mayor of Creve Coeur.
Dr. Goldstein, 53, an anesthesiologist, fell Friday afternoon while coming down the Angels Landing Trail at Zion National Park in Utah.
Dr. Goldstein exercised daily, mostly running, and loved to hike, said one of his partners in private practice, Dr. Christopher Felling. Dr. Goldstein visited Vail, Colo., about twice a year, where he explored the mountain trails.
"Hiking was his thing," Felling said.
More surprising to those who lived near Dr. Goldstein was that he had time to take a vacation. He was remembered as a dedicated physician who worked long hours.
"He'd go to work in the dark and he'd come home in the dark," said Jayne Rains, a former neighbor. Dr. Goldstein graduated from Ladue High School in 1972. He and his wife, Cathy, sent their two children to that same school district.
The family lived for about 20 years in a ranch house in a tree-lined subdivision of Creve Coeur. A year ago, neighbors say, the Goldsteins moved to a larger house in Town and Country. Janet Zimerman, who lived across the street in Creve Coeur, said the Goldsteins gutted and rehabbed their new house before moving in.
"This guy finally lives his dream, moves to a big house and..." said a neighbor, Dr. Ray Rains, his voice tapering off.
Dr. Goldstein had worked for several years at DePaul Health Center before joining a private practice about five years ago. Cindy Duggins, clinical operations manager for surgical services at DePaul, said Dr. Goldstein had administered the anesthesia when she had a Caesarean section seven years ago. "He was more than concerned about my well-being," Duggins said.
Dr. Goldstein was one of 13 partners at Ballas Anesthesia, which he joined about five years ago, co-workers said. He worked mostly as the head anesthesiologist at the Des Peres Square Surgery Center. The center is owned by Orthopedic Associates, a group Dr. Goldstein helped form about seven years ago.
Co-workers described Dr. Goldstein as an excellent doctor. He was funny, easy-going and enjoyed wine, Felling said. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 1980.
Among the survivors are his wife; two children, Alissa and Brent; his mother, Carla Weintraub; a brother, Bill Goldstein; and two sisters, Jan Burts and Joni Goldstein.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at United Hebrew Temple, 13788 Conway Road at Woodsmill Road, with the funeral service to begin at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery-White Road.
