Mont Raven Haines was born July 22, 1888 in Tunnel Hill, Bedford Township, Coshocton, Ohio to Leander Hains and Hannah Venora English. Mont's mother died when he was 7 years old. He left home when he was 12 because he didn't get along with his step-mother and worked as a cabin boy on the boats that went up and down the canal taking care of the mules that pulled the boats. Mont joined the army in October 1907. His name was changed from Hains to Haines when he enlisted. Mont served in the army from 1907 until 1913. He was Chief Mechanic, Field Artillery at the time of his discharge. Mont and Eva married April 10, 1912 in Moline, Rock Island, Illinois when Mont was stationed at the Rock Island Arsenal. Their first child, Ruth, was born in Junction City, Kansas in Feb. 1913 while Mont was stationed at Ft. Riley. Their second child, Karl, was born in Moline, Illinois in Sept. 1915. Their second son, Philip Mont, was born in Moline, Illinois in Sept. 1917. In March 1920, they were in Drumright, Oklahoma for the birth of their third son, Allen Raymond (Ray) and their last child, Esther Eva in 1923. They moved around from 1926 until 1953 (Texas, Colorado, Calif., Kansas, Arkansas) when Mont retired to Homeland, California where they lived until 1962 when they moved to Olivenhain, Calif. to be closer to Esther. Mont suffered a stroke in 1973 and passed away on February 7, 1974. Mont and Eva had 8 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
