Jacob Newberry Pruitt (Prewitt) was born to Peter Pruitt and Malinda Helton Pruitt March 26, 1863 in Lumpkin County, Georgia. He lived and farmed his entire life in Lumpkin County. Shortly after the Civil War ended, in January 1866, Jacob's father died. Jacob was only 2 years old at the time. He married Olivia Pauline Anderson in Lumpkin County on March 17, 1887. Together they had eight children: Leonard, Walter, Frank, Mary, Roy, Charles, Beatrice, and James.

Two of Jacob's sons served in World War I: Walter and Frank. Sadly Walter Lee Pruitt died of pneumonia in France in 1918. He was interred in France and later re-interred at Mount Hope Cemetery in Dahlonega in 1922.
