William was the son of Joseph and Susannah Heath Bonner. Joseph was a veteran of the American Revolution.

William Bonner settled on Wehadkee Creek which formed the Alabama/Georgia line. He invited neighbors to form a Society in his home. They later moved to a log structure in the Standing Rock, AL Community and was named Bonner's Chapel. Later the church became a Methodist Episcopal Church which at an unknown date - probably in the late 1800's - moved to its current location on the main Road in Standing Rock.
