Eloise Hayes Grcich, age 84, of Valparaiso passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso. Eloise was born August 8, 1926 in Durham, NC.

She met Joseph P. (Joe) Grcich of East Chicago while he was stationed in Chapel Hill, NC with the Navy and she was attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Eloise and Joe were married in North Carolina in 1945, soon relocated to East Chicago, and moved to Portage in 1958.

Eloise was a successful Tupperware saleswoman in the late 1950's and once competed in an International Toastmasters Speech contest in San Francisco after winning local and regional contests. Eloise was a lifelong community volunteer for a variety of causes, among them, her children's schools (room mother, active PTA member, band mom), the Valparaiso Adult Learning Center (one-on- one ESL tutor), and the Porter County Historical Society Museum (board member and treasurer). After raising her family, Eloise worked at the Burns Harbor Bethlehem Steel plant. She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Valparaiso.

A survivor of childhood polio, she joined an aquatics class at the Valparaiso YMCA after being diagnosed with post-polio syndrome in her early 50's and didn't miss a class the rest of her life unless traveling or ill. Eloise loved gardening and enjoyed nature, and supported Save the Dunes and others who fought to preserve the Indiana Dunes and Lakeshore. She remained active right up until her recent short illness.

Eloise is survived by all six of her children: Mary Grcich Williams (Bill) of Indianapolis, Jim Grcich (Dee Cheeks) of Portage, Tom Grcich (Sheila) of Valparaiso, John Grcich (Peggy) of South Bend, Melissa Grcich (Dean Riddick) of Durham, NC, and Mike Grcich (Sherri) of Portage. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Hayes Ray Teta of Durham, NC; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Eloise was preceded in death by her parents: Daphne Rigsbee Hayes Cook and Ector P. Hayes, Sr.; brother, E.P. Hayes, Jr.; grandchild, Tony Grcich; and her husband of 38 years, Joe Grcich.
