Princeville Telephone

The Princeville community was shocked to almost a state of disbelief when friends and relatives were informed of the sudden death of Carl Cheesman, 41, well known local merchant and civic leader and lifelong resident of Princeville.
Mr. Cheesman died Saturday evening at the Methodist hospital in Peoria. He had submitted to a major operation Tuesday, June 11, at that hospital and was apparently improving when he suffered a relapse Saturday.
"Red" as he was familiarly known by everyone was born and raised in Princeville. He was associated with his father in the grocery and dry goods business and on the death of his father; he continued that association with his uncle, Henry J. Cheesman.
Mr. Cheesman was widely known throughout Peoria county by virtue of his civic and fraternal leadership. He was an active Mason, holding several offices in that lodge, including that of Past Master. He was also a member of the American Legion post No. 248, a member of district no. 97 grade school board, a member of the Kiwanis Club, the volunteer fire department and several other organizations.

Carl Henry Cheesman, son of Charles J. and Ethel Phillips Cheesman was born August 13, 1899 in Princeville and died in Peoria Methodist hospital June 15, 1940.
He graduated from Princeville high school in 1917 and enlisted in the United States Army September 30, 1918 and received an honorable discharge on December 13, 1918.
On September 8, 1919 he was united in marriage to Lucile Gittler at Galesburg and to this union were born three children, Ethel 19; Robert 18; Jack 16; and Barbara, 11, all at home. He is survived by his widow; two sisters Elizabeth and Mignonne Cheesman both of Princeville and an uncle Henry J. Cheesman, besides a host of other relatives and friends. His mother and father both preceded him in death, the former Jan30, 1930 and the latter August 2, 1936
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 18, at 2 p.m. from the Presbyterian church with Rev. Lee H. Smith in charge of the services. Mrs. Harold Hall presided at the organ and a male quartet composed of Harold Williams, Armond Foster, Luther Mansfield and Harold Bouton sang a selection. Legion and Masonic rites were held at the Princeville cemetery prior to burial. The Tretheway Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers were Fred Jackson, Leroy Chambers, Ralph Gelling, Harry Friedman, Raymond Holmes and Maurice Friedman.
Mr. Cheesman will be sorely missed in Princeville. He was a kind and loving father and husband, with the interests and comforts of his family and home always foremost in his mind. Through his civic and fraternal affiliations he endeavored to make Princeville a better business town and a better community to live in not just for himself and his, but for everyone and these same efforts shall be felt for a long time to come.
