Mary Jacquelyn "Jackie" Walke passed away June 24, 2013 at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

She was born October 10, 1943, in Elkton, Virginia to Frances and Lyle Stevens. After surviving 3 episodes of childhood rheumatic fever, Jackie had a miraculous life – she fought her illness bravely, and passed away peacefully in the company of her family.

She graduated from Madison College, in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in teaching. She was a lifelong Democrat, and an equally passionate fan of the Virginia Cavaliers.

Jackie was a teacher, respected by her colleagues, and loved by her students. In her nearly 4 decades of teaching, she taught hundreds of children to read. She was a Richmond Area Reading Council Teacher of the Year nominee in 1998. She retired from the Richmond Public Schools, having taught at Southampton Elementary for 34 years, in 2000. Jackie was also an avid crafter. She created treasured porcelain dolls, and loved to sew, embroider, and create ceramics.

Jackie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 47 years, Herb; her son Lee, daughter-in-law Kristi, and grandchildren Alma, Frances, and Henry Walke, of Union Kentucky. She is also survived by her sisters June Monger (Ken) of Elkton, Virginia, Joy Wampler (Stanley) of Warrenton, North Carolina, and Judy (Dick) Brushwood, of Richmond Virginia. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Anne Sisson, Ken Monger, Jennifer Jones, Courtney Guiney, Collin Brushwood, Susan Bolyard, and Timothy Wampler.

Jackie insisted that she did not want a funeral – she wants all of her friends and family to have a party and celebrate. This will be planned for later this summer.

Donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
