Judge George Edward Oliver, died July 2, 2004, in Chatham County. He was born September 20, 1914 in Covington, Georgia to Frank Oliver and Eugenia Carr Oliver. Following his mother's death shortly thereafter, his father cared for him as a single parent until a few years later when he brought George to Savannah to live with his two aunts, the Misses Etta and Lassie Oliver; with whom he lived until their respective deaths. Judge Oliver attended the public schools of Chatham County and Belmont Abbey. He graduated from the McCallie School Presbyterian College and the University of Georgia Law School. The Judge served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, participating in the anti-submarine war in the Caribbean and later the support of U.S. forces returning to the Philippines in the Western Pacific. He commanded the USCG Cutter "Agassis" in the Caribbean and a re-supply ship in the pacific. Judge Oliver married Miss Dorothy Corn ell, his devoted wife in May 1944. The Judge was active in all facets of life in the community. He served in virtually every office of the masonry, including Worshipful Master of Landrum Lodge, SGIG of Georgia, representative in the Scottish Rite Valley of Savannah; Potentate of Alee Shrine Temple and Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Georgia. Similarly, he served in numerous offices of his church, Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, including Chairman of many important committees, such as Pastor Parish Relations and Music, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of the Official Board. As a member of the Civitan Club of Savannah, the Judge served one term as President. In his chosen profession of law, he served as Vice President of the Savannah Bar Association, Judge of the Police Court of Savannah, Judge of the City Court of Savannah, now the State Court of Chatham County and Judge of the Superior Court of the Eastern Judicial Circuit, the last office from which he re tired and continued to serve as a Senior Superior Court Judge. He is survived by his widow, Dorothy C. Oliver of Savannah; his sisters-in-law, Lucile Rentz Lott of Waycross; Virginia C. Aldrich and her husband, James H. Aldrich of Melbourne, FL; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in the United States and New Zealand. Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel. Funeral: 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 5, 2004 at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church with The Reverend Lowery Brantley and The Reverend Hale Bishop, officiating.
