The 1920 US Census of Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 31 Y/O Sam Cross Farrar, Sr., a railroad fireman, and his 29 Y/O wife, Mabel Ealon (Canterbury) Farrar. Also living in the household were their children: 9 Y/O Frances Ann Farrar (b. 16 Jun 1910) , 8 Y/O Marjorie Ealon Farrar (b. 16 Aug 1911), 7 Y/O Sam Cross Farrar, Jr.(b. 19 Oct 1912, d. 10 Dec 1963), 4 Y/O Larston Dawn Farrar (b. 26 Feb 1915, d. 1971) and 11 months old Eleanor Virginia Farrar (b. 04 May 1919). Note: Mabel Catherine Farrar, b. 09 May 1917, d. Nov 1917.

Also living in the household were their children: 19 Y/O Frances Ann Farrar, a stenographer at a steel plant, 17 Y/O Sam Cross Farrar, Jr., a clerk at a railroad office, 15 Y/O Larston Dawn Farrar and 10 Y/O Eleanor Virginia Farrar.

In 1935, in the middle of the "Great Depression", the Birmingham City Directory recorded Sam Cross Farrar, Jr. as employed at the Seventy-fourth Street Service Station and living at 1209 Princeton Ave., the home of his parents.

Sam married Barbara Jo Nance on 03 May 1937 in Birmingham, AL. Barbara Jo Nance was born on 21 Feb 1908 at Hartselle, Morgan Co., AL. She died 23 Feb 1999 at Birmingham, AL. Her parents were Ralph T. Nance and Lillie M. (Tomlinson) Nance. Barbara worked as a saleslady at Loveman's Department Store in Birmingham.

The 1940 US Census of Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 27 Y/O Sam Cross Farrar, Jr., a conductor for the Birmingham Southern Railroad, and his 28 Y/O wife, Barbara Jo (Nance) Farrar.

Sam, Jr. enlisted into the U. S. Army during WWII on 06 Sep 1944 at Fort McClellan, AL.

The last Birmingham, AL City Directory was the 1960 Edition. It recorded Sam Cross Farrar, Jr., a conductor for the Birmingham Southern Railroad, and his wife, Barbara N. Farrar, living at 4733 Court St. (Ensley).

Sam and Barbara Jo (Nance) Farrar, Jr were childless.

Obituary of Sam Cross, Jr:
"Sam C. Farrar, Jr., 51, a life-long resident of Birmingham and an employee of the Birmingham Water Works Co., died today at his home, 4733 Court S. Central Park. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at John-Ridout's Elmwood Cemetery Chapel, with burial at Elwood.
Mr. Farrar was a member of the Central Park Methodist Church, was President of the Men's Club and was active in the Men's Bible Class. A life member of the F&AM Masonic Lodge No. 380, he was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Nance Farrar; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam C. Farrar Sr. of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Larston D. Farrar of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Mrs. C. G. Black of Marietta, Ga., Mrs. J. C. Bennett and Mrs. W. M. Newby, both of Birmingham."

Sam Cross Farrar, Jr. was the 4th cousin 3 times removed of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) through his father, Sam Cross Farrar, Sr. (See Find A Grave Memorials Mark Twain and Mark Twain.
