The son of Thomas Jacob & Maria (Windt) Kuntz, in 1860 he was a mason living presumably in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five in Harrisburg July 31, 1861, mustered into federal service there August 5 as a private with Battery G, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery (43rd Pa), and honorably discharged at term's end August 8, 1864.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-eight in Chambersburg March 8, 1865, as a substitute, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. G, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865.

He married Julia Ann Richwine ca. 1866 and fathered John (b. @1867), Thomas Jacob (b. 12/17/68), Rosella (b. 06/16/70 - married Daniel Marsh), Harmon Philip (b. 06/12/72), Margaret (b. 12/26/73 = married a Wanamaker), Clara Rebecca (b. 11/08/76 - married Harrison M. Starner), William (b. 03/17/78), and Catherine (b. 04/27/89 - married George A. Hopple). Cause of his death is listed as "uremic poison and lack of nutrition and old age."
