A prominent Stem citizen, a retired contractor, J.K. (Doc) Watkins, 67, died Tuesday night en-route to a Durham hospital.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today, Friday, at Stem Methodist Church by eh pastor, Rev. William E. Knight, Rev. Morris Byers of Creedmoor is to assist. Burial is to follow in Elmwood Cemetery here with Masonic rites conducted by Tally Ho Lodge.
Born in Batesburg, S.C. a son of the late Benjamin Z. and Mary Wise Watkins, he had resided at Stem for many years while engaged in the house-moving and contracting business. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of Tally Ho Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, the former Henrietta Wheeler of the home, seven sons, J.K. Jr., of Houston, Tex., Joe Ben, William,Cecil and Julian Watkins, all of Creedmoor, David Watkins of the U.S. Navy presently assigned in Japan and Thomas of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Jack Horner of Durham, Mrs. Emory C. Albritton of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Mrs. Richard G. Averett of Charlotte; six brothers, George and Murray Watkins of Batesburg, S.C., Fred, Walter and Frank Watkins, all of Charlotte and Clyde Watkins of Greenville, S.C.; three sisters, Mrs. L.C.Walker of Burlington, Mrs. Sarah Bush of Franklinton, and Mrs. Annie Wunda, of Atlantic City, N.J., and 16 grandchildren.
The body is to remain at the Perkinson-Currin Funeral Home until taken to the church an hour before the service to lie in state.
