|Birth: ||Apr. 4, 1868|
New Hampshire, USA
|Death: ||Dec. 22, 1947|
Newport News City
Her age as stated in the 1900, 1920 & 1930 census, and in her obituary, indicate that Clara was born in 1873. However, she appeared on the 1870 census as a 2 year old and on the 1880 census as a 12 year old - indicating she was born in 1868.
According to Clara, the family moved from Maine to New Hampshire in 1867; to Minnesota in 1869; to Louisiana?(see note below); to Lynchburg, VA between 1882-1893; and finally settled in Norfolk, VA in 1899. In 1939, she moved to Newport News, VA to live with her son, Roger.
Her father, Mariner W. Garnett, a Drayman (now known as truck driver), was killed in St Paul, MN in 1882.
Note: The mention of Louisiana is suspicious. She may have meant that they had lived in the section of MN that had, at one time, been part of the Louisiana Territory.
