She was raised with her sister, Ethel, in Marietta. They both attended Marietta City Schools.

She married George Devol Padgitt, son of George Devol and Laura Elizabeth (Smith) Padgitt, on January 10, 1934 in Marietta, Ohio. They were united in marriage by Minister Homer Baumgardner of the Methodist Church.

Like many during World War II, Martha and George, moved to Canton to seek employment. She was employed at the Timken Roller Bearing Company during this time. They moved back to Marietta shortly before 1950. They divorced on August 26, 1974 in Washington County, Ohio.

Minus her short time in Canton she spent her entire life in Washington County, where she was employed at American Bisque Pottery and Colonial Quik-Cleaners and Laundromat. She had also been a custodian at the Washington County Courthouse and was later employed as a cook at Selby General Hospital for 17 years until her retirement. She also worked at the popular Merryland Pizzeria in Marietta for a number of years.
