William has departed us to be with the Lord our Father. He was preceded in death by his father, William John Chapman II, His Mother, Marie Byars Chapman, and his brother, Robert Michael Chapman. He leaves behind a loving wife of 51 years, Rebecca Ann Chapman, three loving children, Teresa Lynn Matchett, William John Chapman IV and Jeffery Brian Chapman as well as two grandchildren, Marc and Katelynn, Son In Law Steve Matchett, and Daughters in Law Gloria Chapman and Claire Chapman. William is also survived by his brother, Richard Charles Chapman and his wife Elizabeth and Mary Chapman, wife of Robert.
William, or Bill as he was more commonly called, was a well respected teacher and performer of music, playing the trombone and tuba. Bill received his bachelor of music degree at Sam Houston State University and his Masters degree in Music Education from Southwest Texas State University. His career started in the United States Air Force as a member United States Air Force Band in Japan. He then moved to Houston, Texas where he played at such venues as in the Cork Club at the Shamrock Hotel. He also played for Presidents, including John F. Kennedy. In San Antonio he played with many bands including the Happy Jazz Band, the Band Aids, at The Roaring 20's (formerly known as Shadowland) and the Sentimental Journey Orchestra in Kerrville. He performed at many area churches and occasionally with the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra. He taught in the Northside Independent School District at middle schools including Sul Ross, Sam Rayburn, Pat Neff, and William Hobby Middle Schools. Bill was a Free Mason and a member in good standing at the Lonnie Irvin Daylight Lodge, and a Shriner at the Alzafar Shrine Temple.
Memorial Service will be Saturday January 21, 2012, 1:00 - 2:00 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church
Cremated, Ashes given to family or friend.
