Francis X Elder was the son of James Basil Elder and Sarah B. Hess. As a young man he enlisted in the Army for World War l and was the first serviceman from Emmitsburg killed in action in France at Meuse-Argonne. The American Legion honored him by naming the Legion Post 121, The Francis X. Elder Post.
