Lawrence Callahan, 76, founder of Data Management Services Inc. and former varsity boys' basketball coach for Saint John's High School (1959-65), died March 13, 2011 of heart failure.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lucille Barger Callahan; his three daughters Michelle Johnston (Jeff), Laura Callahan, and Beth Colson (Michael); three grandchildren Brigid Johnston, Alexander Colson, and Sean Colson.
He is also survived by his sister Eileen Dowd, father-in-law Carlton Barger, and brother-in-law Calvin Barger.
He was predeceased by his sister Anne Lindner.
Mr. Callahan was born and raised in Bronx, New York.
He attended the Manhattan Prep School in the Bronx and graduated from Steven's Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He served in the Army from 1958 to 1960 at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland.
He then went on to work for the Board of Education and for Litton Bionetics before he founded Data Management Services Inc, a successful computer services contracting firm, in 1981. Mr. Callahan retired as CEO of DMS Inc. in 2009.
Mr. Callahan also coached Saint John's High School boys' varsity and junior varsity teams from 1959 until 1965. He enjoyed success as a coach with his team winning the Blue Ridge Conference for the 1959-1960 season and winning "Coach of the Year" award. He was inducted into Saint John's Catholic Prep's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, and in 2009, the school established the Coach Callahan Classic basketball tournament in his honor.
A memorial service was held on on Monday March 21st at 11 am at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick, Maryland.
