GREENSBORO, NC — Jethro "Jerry" Battle, 85, died suddenly on Friday, November 13, 2009.

Visitation was at 11:30 am and funeral at noon on Wednesday, November 18, at Hargett Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Howard Woods officiating. Cremains were to be buried at a later date in the Powell Family Cemetery in Nash County.

Jethro was born in Nash County on February 6, 1924.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mabel, last year.

He retired from New York City Transit Authority in 1987 and moved to Greensboro, where neighbors nicknamed him "the Mayor of Adams Farm".

He is survived by four children, Milton Battle (Keywanda) of Pittsburgh, PA, Rasheeda (Shaka) Ben Yahya of Jacksonville, Florida, Minnie Battle Mayes (James) of Jamestown, NC, and Gordon Battle of Tucson, Arizona; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Olivia Thompkins (David) of Winston-Salem.

Hargett Funeral Service assisted the family.
