Mathias "Math" Willems was the son of John and Mary Ann (Lennertz or Leonard) Willems. He migrated to the USA from Germany circa 1884 settling in Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois where several of his siblings also resided at the time.
At the age of 23 he married another Streator resident, Dorothea "Dora" Sauer on September 27, 1886. An immigrant like himself, she was a native of Bavaria.
By 1900 the couple had settled in Franklin County, Arkansas where Mathias farmed. Mathias and Dorothea had adopted a daughter, Margaret, off of the orphan train.
By 1910 Math and Dora's family had grown with the addition of two more orphans, John and Joseph, also adopted off of the orphan train. Mathias and the family had moved into the town of Charleston, Arkansas where he owned and operated a dry goods store.
Not long before the 1920 U.S. Census, Mathias, Dorothea, John and Joe had moved to Hidalgo County, Texas outside the town of Mission where they farmed. Another son, Daniel, was also enumerated as having been adopted.
Both Mathias and Dorothea were devout Roman Catholics.
