Roxanne was a special cat, born about 1999. Early in life she had some encounters with the law. Her first known act, as a tiny kitten on a bitterly cold night, was to appear at the side of a policewoman (Melissa) who had stopped a truck by the woods and was writing a ticket. Her tail was frostbitten and bent and she was so dirty that her color was unknown. She could not meow, only sort of croak. Melissa took her home and bathed her and took care of her as she had so many others. In 2000 Melissa moved with Roxanne (and 12 other rescued cats) to the home of Mary, Melissa's mother, in Florida.

From Mary's home Roxanne turned up missing and was gone for three days. Melissa finally found her up a tree, scared and hungry and unable to get down, but still alive. Dear Mary had to climb the tree and talk to Roxanne since Melissa was very pregnant at the time. The police were called to the scene to assist Roxanne, and now Mary, to descend safely. Roxanne did not get out again, but the chaos of the busy household was hard on a creature with such a timid nature.

Roxanne became acquainted with Mary's dear friend Jen, who agreed to give Roxanne a temporary home until a more suitable arrangement could be made. With enough personal space to allow her to thrive, Roxanne's special personality began to shine. As Jen and Roxanne became better acquainted it was clear that this was an excellent arrangement for both of them. They built a good life together. They knew each other well and looked out for one another. Roxanne once saved Jen from a rattlesnake by not allowing her to leave the porch and stepping onto the snake only one step below. They later moved to New York state and after a few years some of Jen's grown children actually saw Roxanne, who was a private being and mostly preferred just Jen's company. She is greatly missed.
