Dr. Walter Blair Stewart graduated from Princeton University in 1920 and then went on to Johns Hopkins Medical School, graduating in 1923.

Walter practiced pediatrics from 1926 until 1983, during which time he was given the Golden Merit Award by the American Medical Society of New Jersey for 50 years of medical practice. The Atlantic City Kiwanis Club named him its Citizen of the Year in 1932 for his service during a polio epidemic. He was named an honorary member of the Atlantic City Rotary Club in 1980 after being a member there for 53 years. He also was a Paul Harris Fellow of the club. Walter was chief of pediatrics from 1927 to 1959 at Atlantic City Hospital and was a medical director from 1928 until 1972 at the Florence Crittenton Home in Atlantic City. He was a charter member of the American Academy of Pediatricians and a member of the board of trustees at Ventnor Community Church and the Atlantic City Y.M.C.A. He was a former member of the Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce's board of directors.

Hobbies: Piano, stamp collecting, book collecting, hiking, genealogy, and tennis.

Walter was an excellent genealogist and is responsible for compiling many of the records in our family history.

Dr. WALTER STEWART, 90, of Atlantic City, died Tuesday in Atlantic City Medical Center.

Born in Atlantic City, he was a lifelong resident.

Dr. Stewart practiced pediatrics from 1926 until 1983, during which time he was awarded the Golden Merit Award by the American Medical Society of New Jersey for 50 years of medical practice. He was awarded the 1932 Citizen of the Year award by the Atlantic City Kiwanis Club for his service during a polio epidemic.

He was named an honorary member of the Atlantic City Rotary Club in 1980 after being a member there for 53 years. He also was a Paul Harris Fellow of the club.

He was chief of pediatrics from 1927 to 1959 at Atlantic City Hospital and was a medical director from 1928 until 1972 at the Florence Crittenton Home in Atlantic City. He was a charter member of the American Academy of Pediatricians. He was the medical director at Children's Seashore House in 1968 and was a physician for the Friends School.

Dr. Stewart was a member of the board of trustees at Ventnor Community Church and the Atlantic City YMCA, where he was active for many years. He was a former member of the Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce's board of directors.

He attended Atlantic City Friends School and was a 1916 graduate of Atlantic City High School. He graduated Princeton University in 1920 and was a Phi Beta Kappa member. He received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1923 and was a member of AOA, the school's honorary medical society.

He was a member of Ye Olde Tymers Club of Atlantic City.

Dr. Stewart's hobbies included reading, piano, golf, tennis and collecting stamps.

Surviving are a son, Blair Stewart of Hornbrook, Calif.; three daughters, Linda Cole of Brigantine, Giffin Russell of Antrim, N.H., and Martha Prowe of Minerva, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, in Ventnor Community Church.

Contributions may be made to Atlantic City Medical Center.
