James H.O. Peterson, age 79, of Edmond, Okla., passed away July 6, 2009, from complications following a series of strokes. Jim's great love of life, laughter, sincerity, honesty, deep faith in God, generosity of spirit, strength of character and resourcefulness were among the many traits that made him such an extraordinary man. A visionary, he knew anything was possible if you believe in yourself, aim high, be resourceful and work hard.

Born James Homer Oliver Peterson, Jan. 9, 1930, he grew up in Galva, Ill. He earned his Bachelor's degree from The Colorado College in Colorado Springs, where he pledged Kappa Sigma fraternity and fell in love with Helen Barthell. They married before Jim reported to service with the U.S. Marine Corps. He continued service through U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and retired with the rank of Major.

Jim's long, successful management career began with Ralston Purina Company, where he served for 25 years and retired as regional vice president. Jim was appointed to state purchasing director, business development director for the Department of Commerce and over the years worked with the governor's office on numerous special projects. He was national accounts manager for Macklanburg Duncan before forming his consulting business in 1984. He was vice president at VePed Traffic Controls, held president positions at MCM Enterprises, Agee Products, DecraMold and worked with Medical Inventory Control, Hoffman Bikes, Inc., McFarland Farms and others. He served on many boards, including the State of Oklahoma Insurance and Retirement Board and Ottumwa Heights College Trustees.

Jim led a very active life. He received many awards for his 67 years of service to the Boy Scouts, including Life Scout the Silver Beaver Award. He was a devoted, active alum and supporter of The Colorado College and was very involved in Santa Fe Presbyterian Church. He served as deacon, trustee and elder at Presbyterian churches through the years. He was a member of the Oak Tree Men's Bible Study and the TIPS Club and was a Rotarian as well as a 32nd Degree Mason and an Elk. Jim was also an avid golfer.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Helen B. Peterson; son, Mark Peterson and wife Valerie of Oklahoma City; granddaughter Erica Fukuhara and husband, Jim, and great-grandchildren Teya and Darren of Parker, Colo.; grandson Benjamin Peterson and wife, Jennifer, and great-grandchildren Nathaniel and Jocelyn of Oklahoma City; daughter, Sarah Blew of Edmond; granddaughter, Natasha Neumann and husband, Dr. David Neumann II and great-grandchildren, David Anthony III and Olivia of Royal Oak, Mich.; grandson, Justin Blew and wife Kristy Tumlinson and soon to be great-grandchild of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Paige Peterson Cummings of San Antonio, Texas; parents, William and Grace Peterson of Galva, Ill.; brother, William Peterson of Mineola, Texas; sister, Fern Wenkus and husband, Joe of Galva, Ill.; sister, Evelyn Huff and husband, Pete of Kewanee, Ill.; sister, Lorna DeBier and husband Joe of Toulon, Ill.; and parents-in-law, George P. and Elisabeth Barthell of Basin, Wyo.

His family was the center of his life and he cherished his many friends. He was a loving husband to Helen for 58 years and the cornerstone to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim influenced the lives of his family and friends more than he ever knew. He made a difference in so many lives and shared a part of himself wherever he went. He was truly a gift from God and will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Jim would like to thank the caring staff at Epworth Villa. A memorial service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009. Memorial donations may be made in Jim's honor to the Last Frontier Council, Boy Scouts and to the Santa Fe Presbyterian Church Building Fund in Edmond, Okla.
