"This is my beloved, and this is my friend."
Song of Solomon 5:16
John Henry Kunz, 86, of Bellevue, Washington died at his home on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 22, 1924, in rural Emmons County, North Dakota to Andrew H. and Lizzie (Kingman) Kunz. He was the oldest of six children.
On May 2, 1974, John knelt at the altar of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Olivia, Minnesota. The scripture which spoke to his heart was Romans 10:9, "If you confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." So on that day John was saved as he asked Jesus to come into his heart to be his Lord and Savior. God is faithful to His children, and on Thanksgiving Day 2010, the angels came to take John home to be with Jesus for all eternity.
John received his elementary education in a one-room school in Emmons County, ND. He graduated from high school in Pollock, South Dakota in 1942. He began his teaching career that fall in the same one-room school where he himself attended for eight years. Every two years he passed the Teacher's Examination, certifying him to teach in elementary schools. He taught in Emmons County for the next ten years. In 1956 John graduated with a BS Degree in Social Science and Education from North Dakota State Normal and Industrial College, Ellendale, ND. John holds a life-time teaching certificate as well as a degree in Guidance Counseling from the University of North Dakota. He continued to attend summer sessions at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND and MN State University, Moorhead, MN. as he worked toward his Master's Degree in History. He retired in 1983 after 40 years in the classroom, having taught students from Head Start program, kindergarten and on through high school.
John enjoyed a good game of baseball, whether playing the game himself in his younger years or armchair-coaching the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, or Seattle Mariners in his later years. He was an avid genealogist and especially enjoyed helping others with their research.
He faithfully served in the church where he and his family attended, from the official board, treasurer, grounds keeper, Lay speaker, Usher or Sunday school teacher. He actively participated in the Methodist Lay Witness Mission under the direction of, Maurice Schwen, coordinator, Blue Earth, Minnesota. John traveled to numerous churches across the state sharing his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was elected to the City Council and was an active member of Kiwanis. He was instrumental in organizing a Kiwanis Club in Olivia, MN and was elected Charter President. John served in the position of Lt. Governor of Division Two, Minnesota-Dakota District of Kiwanis International.
John is survived by Dorothy, his loving wife of 49 years, daughter Anita (Alan) Fossum of Bellevue, WA, stepdaughters, Geraldine (Jody)(Charles) Foy of Bismarck, ND and Cynthia (Cindy) (Bob) Briggs of Urbana, Iowa; granddaughter Jessica Fossum, Bellevue, WA; two brothers, Fred Kunz of Pollock, SD and Ted (Faith) Kunz of Philip, SD; one sister, Arlene (Gene) Morton of Britton, SD and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
