John Earl Gooding was a loyal son who stayed on the family farm and helped his widowed mother Laura Hendricks Gooding farm. He lost his hearing as a child due to a high fever and he never married. When he was too elderly to farm he sold the farm which had been in the family over 100 years and moved near his sister to warmer Yucaipa, California. There he made furniture for his family members and handcarved farm momentoes like oxen pulling carts.
