Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the rebellion in 1861, he enlisted in the Missouri U.S. Reserve Corps and was commissioned a as First Lieutenant. Serving as an adjutant of the Missouri State Militia 3rd Regiment, he helped organize the 12th Missouri Cavalry and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel. In 1863, he was promoted Colonel of the 31st Missouri Infantry and served as Adjutant General of Missouri until the war's end. For service to the Union, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March, 1865.
