James Duke Burton, Sr. - Savannah -Mr. Burton was born September 19th of 1926,
his golden heart stopped beating on April 5, 2006 at the age of 79. He was born
in Louisville, Kentucky, moved to Chicago where he lived for many years. Mr.
Burton served in the U.S. Army in the 1940's, his rank was Tech 5. He was one of
the first to teach members of the Army to drive amphibian trucks, thus, after
moving to Savannah he drove 18 wheelers for 17 years at Builders Transport.
Winning many awards for his reliable service to the company and for safety, he
also drove for 13 years at S.I.L. James was loved and admired by everyone who
knew him and was a distinguished member of the Central Baptist Church, where he
professed the lord as his savior. James was a wonderful Husband, caring Father,
doting Grandfather & Great Grandfather. He was a superb role model for all of
us, loved by everybody he touched. We would call him Granddaddy - but he was
much more - he was our teacher, helping to raise all of us. A beautiful selfless
man, who gave all of himself for everyone and never complained. We will miss him
terribly, never forgetting him or the lessons he never stopped teaching us in
his own way. We have been so blessed to have this man share his life with us.
