Mr. Clay served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. He served as a Seaman on the USS Pensacola and the USS Princeton.
He served under the name John Walsh. He also served as Private in Company E of the 1st Missouri Cavalry.
Upon his death his pension was contested by two claimed widows: Margaret T. McClay of Pennsylvania and Louisa T. Clay of Oregon.
