Shruti Rajya Laxmi Devi Rana
Birth: Oct. 16, 1976
Death: Jun. 1, 2001

Nepali royalty. Born the daughter of King Birendra and Queen Aiswarya of Nepal. She married Gorakh Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana May 8, 1997 and with him had two children. On the third Friday of every month, the princess attended regular family gatherings held at Narayanhity Royal Palace. On Friday June 1, 2001 the royal family gathered for dinner at the Tribhvan Sadan of Narayanhity Royal Palace with over twenty other relatives. Just before 9:00 PM, wearing black army boots, a camouflage jacket and trousers, and black leather gloves, Shruti’s elder brother, Crown Prince Dipendra entered carrying a number of firearms and began shooting. Firing more than one hundred rounds from at least three weapons, the Crown Prince perpetrated the worst massacre of royalty in modern history before shooting himself. Princess Shruti was taken to Birendra Military Hospital at 9:20 PM and was pronounced dead at 9:55 PM the same evening. Shruti was one of ten members of the royal family who died of wounds sustained. The murders are thought to be the result of a bitter family argument regarding Prince Dipendra’s choice of a bride. (bio by: Iola)
